Clinical exam – not only of the teeth but of the entire oral cavity , perioral tissues and structures. When necessary – digital imaging for precise diagnosis.
Dr. Cohen recommends starting annual visits to the dentist from the age of 1 year.
The advantages of a routine annual exam –
- Early diagnosis leads to less-complex treatment and avoids pain and infection
- Your child gets accustomed to the clinic, staff and surroundings and feels more comfortable and less anxious with each visit
- If there’s a need for treatment – the child has developed a trusting relationship with Dr. Cohen and does not feel threatened
Studies have shown that 50% of children under the age of 14 have suffered dental trauma. Trauma can cause psychological, health and/or aesthetic problems.
Besides routine dental treatment, it is important to know how to ‘treat’ the child’s fear and sensitivity to pain.
In some cases it is necessary to treat the baby teeth [deciduous dentition] even though, in time, they will fall out. If left untreated –pain, infection , and even damage to the permanent [adult] teeth may occur.
A general dentist is allowed to use only nitrous oxide [i.e. laughing gas] to calm the patient. A board-certified specialist has a license to use other methods of sedation, using different medications combined with nitrous oxide.
The purpose of sedation is to calm the patient so that he can receive the best-possible dental treatment, pain-free, and to make the experience a positive one, in order to overcome his fear.
Starting with the habits we teach our children at a very young age, prevention includes:
- A healthy diet
- Proper oral hygiene practices
- The regular use of fluoride
- Annual professional cleaning by a certified dental hygienist
- Tooth sealants, and more
Dr. Cohen and his staff will help you create your own personal prevention program.
